Sometimes it seems a lifetime ago, but there was a long stretch of time when a big chunk of my brain was devoted to a big but fairly specific topic:
High school football in San Bernardino County.
There was nothing bigger, in that part of the sports world. Everything else was somewhere down the line. Professionals, colleges, […]

Site for Remembering Jim Long

One of our favorite former journalism co-workers, Jim Long, died in September at age 46. Far too young for far too good a guy.
Here is the obit that we did here in September, but most of you have seen it.
The news here is that his widow, Judith Pfeffer, has created a blog dedicated to those […]

Allen Bradford’s Long Wait with Trojans Pays Off
October 25th, 2009 · No Comments · College football, The Sun, USC
For three-plus seasons, Allen Bradford’s decision to play football at USC looked as if it might have been a major mistake.
He was recruited to play safety, or maybe linebacker … and got shifted to tailback late in the summer of 2006 when the position was hit by a rash of injuries. After spending most of […]

David T. Bristow, former San Bernardino Sun sports staffer, was sworn in Friday as a federal magistrate judge for the U.S. Central District Court.
Yes. Our David Bristow, former Sun agate clerk and the guy who covered, home and road, the historic first season of the San Bernardino […]

Adieu, Prep Football
September 14th, 2009 · 11 Comments · Sports Journalism, The Sun
From 1976 through 2007, I was all over high school football. Because I needed to be. And because I wanted to be.
I’m going to guestimate that I saw more than 300 high school football games during my days running (or working for) the sports department of the San Bernardino Sun. Maybe 400. Lots and lots […]

The French Girl and the Giants in the Super Bowl

I bet on sports, basically, never. I’ve never placed a bet in Las Vegas. I haven’t spent one minute in/at a sports book. I don’t know a bookie. (Or, at least, I don’t think I know a bookie.) I can’t tell you what the point spread is on any game I’m not covering, and I […]

Reinventing Yourself by Going Back in Time

A curious case, this one.
A former journalism colleague of mine has been born again. But not in a religious sense.
This person has turned back the hands of time … by inventing a birthday in 1970.
Or 15-16 years after the real one.

Lakers-Houston: Comments Worthy of a Headline
May 6th, 2009 · No Comments · Basketball, Lakers, Sports Journalism, The Sun
I dashed off an item late Monday night, after the Lakers lost Game 1 of their series with Houston. I was determined to catch the 12:07 a.m. Metrolink train back to Long Beach, along with several dozen of my best crazy and drug-addled homeless friends … And, yes, I made it, but only by a […]
