Taking a Stab at Running Commentary

June 24th, 2009 · 4 Comments · Journalism, soccer, Sports Journalism

I’ve never tried this. But I will today. Just because. To see if it is possible. Or sensible. Or useful.

Running commentary!

I am going to watch the Confederations Cup soccer match between the United States and Spain, which begins at 11:30-ish … and bang in entries every few minutes.

Now, it seems to me as if it will be highly distracting to be looking down at the keyboard — I type like a fiend, but I’m not really a “touch” typist — while the match keeps moving. But that’s what instant replay is for,  right?

And every few minutes I’ll post updates. And hope that WordPress doesn’t seize up.

I know some of you are at work, and you can get away with reading random Web sites for minutes at a time (like,  say, this one) but not even in these latter days of workplace discipline can you get away with switching on the TV and staring at it for two hours. (But you might try it on an alternate screen if it’s streaming somewhere, wouldn’t you? Hmm. Is the soccer game available on the net? I don’t think so,  but maybe …)

Anyway,  that’s what I’m gonna do. Running commentary. See if it works. Maybe I’ll like it. Maybe you will. Perhaps it will be fun.

And possibly, just possibly, it is an incredibly stupid idea. We’ll find out.

You should have twittered the whole thing! 🙂 I mean, Dan Jenkins’ twitter feed was the talk of the U.S. Open this weekend.

Some of us who work on college campuses get ESPN360 for free, so I will had a small window open in the bottom left corner of my screen.

I enjoy live blogging. I did it for RCC’s hoops title run and, if you remember, the SBL draft.

I’m glad you’re giving it a shot. You picked a great event. Now you have to do it for the final.

Ian is right – that would have made one hell of a Twitter feed Paul.

You got the content down. Just fire off short bursts next time.
