The Rolls-Royce Phantom in My Garage

We like where we live. Quite a bit. Particularly given where we lived the first three years in Abu Dhabi. “Functional” would be the biggest compliment we could pay those two apartments.

Where we are now is a tower of about 20 stories. Maybe four years old. With a gym, a swimming pool and several businesses on the ground floor.

And it’s not particularly expensive, by Abu Dhabi standards — which run a bit high.

So, a nice place … but not a posh place. (Further evidence: No fewer than four of our newspaper colleagues live in the building.)

And if all the journalists and all the one-bedroom apartments don’t tell the story, the garage certainly does. Our 2004 Audi does not look particularly out of place, even with the hulking SUVs and the occasional sports car down there.

Our garage does not, however, usually house the very recent Rolls-Royce (above) we have seen in the past few days.

And that is not just any ol’ Rolls-Royce.

It appears to be the Rolls at the high end of the Rolls spectrum:

The Phantom.

Follow the link to the Rolls Royce home page, and click on “models” and you can see the four types, one above the other, and the pick of the litter is the Phantom.

Let’s start with the gauche: The cost.

The “low” end of the Rolls family is the Ghost, which a bargain hunter can buy new for $286,000.

(Until this week, actually, when Rolls rolled out its new “starter” model, the Dawn, a four-seat convertible, which we are going to guess will be cheaper than the Ghost. Oh, wait: Apparently it costs quite a bit more than the Ghost. This story suggests the Dawn will set you back $386,000.)

Back to the grown-up version of the Rolls-Royce.

The 2015 Phantom starts at $407,000 and goes up to $480,000.

And that certainly is one in our parking garage.

Yeah. Rolls will include anything you want, and it will be hand-built, etc.

I have to resist the temptation of walking over and admiring the car.

Is it driven by the owner of the building? The owner of one of the businesses?

Guessing we shall never know, but that Rolls certainly brings additional class to our parking garage.
