‘Star Wars’ Fans Don’t Need to Come to Abu Dhabi

August 5th, 2015 · No Comments · Uncategorized

It’s the sort of “no news” story newspapers typically do not run.

Star Wars sets are not still standing in the Abu Dhabi desert: Twofour54

And then you peruse the story, and you realize why “no news” in this case really is news.

The Huffington Post website recently ran an item suggesting the sets, constructed outside Abu Dhabi for filming scenes from the next movie in the series: Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, were still there and could become a tourist attraction.

Wrong … and wrong.

Twofour54, the Abu Dhabi free-zone media company that worked with the Star Wars VII people, including director J.J. Abrams, were quick to deny the report and said they would ask for HuffPost to make a correction.

A twofour54 spokesman said: “The last thing we want is hordes of tourists driving around in the desert, getting lost.”

And, rest assured, that would be a real risk. Star Wars fans are, uh, intense, and the desert south and east of Abu Dhabi is no joke. A breakdown out there by Liwa, in the Empty Quarter, could lead to some very difficult/scary situations. Or worse.

On the errant HuffPost entry, The National noted: “This all ran contrary to the reports from cast, crew and eyewitnesses who visited the locations after last May’s shoot, and our own report that the sets had been dismantled and placed in storage.

“We are storing them until we curate them with the support of our friends in the Cultural District,” twofour54 chief executive Noura Al Kaabi told The National last June. “We haven’t finalized the location but it is likely to be Saadiyat.” (Saadiyat is the island home to several museums, including an Abu Dhabi version of the Louvre.)

Just in case anyone thinks they are just trying to dissuade fans from looking, The National knows exactly where the sets were located and we can confirm that they are no longer there.

The Star Wars story which noted the end of the sets in the desert would be like catnip to fans because, as The National wrote: A “whole world” had been built in the Abu Dhabi desert, including “shuttle-like” spacecraft, a large tower, and some “fast buggies” powered by jet engines, and a blast crater has been created with explosives.

A fan wouldn’t mind seeing that, a few months before the planned December release. Especially during an exotic trip to Abu Dhabi!

Sometimes no news is news.
