Cristiano Ronaldo and the Scripted ‘Prank’

August 6th, 2015 · No Comments · Football, soccer

Just another hoax. I was thinking that even before this commercial ended.

Nothing about the Nike “prank” video starring Cristiano Ronaldo dressed up as a homeless guy feels real.

None of it. Except the crowd at the end when it becomes clear that it’s it’s Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo doing tricks with the ball in a local plaza. That, I believe. Nothing else, aside from the guys who look a lot like security men who show up at the end of the commercial.

The “message” bit of this is the worst part — that only a child can see past the sweatpants and Ashton Kutcher-in-Two-and-a-Half Men-style beard to see a real person. It’s too pat.

The kid is too cute and upscale to be hanging around with anyone who might actually be homeless. His parents would have taught him to avoid homeless people — as pretty much everyone else does in the video does. (OK, that part seems real.)

Also, the homeless guy’s dog is way too clean.

Have a look, too, and see if the kid looks like he really has made some connection with dressed-for-Halloween CR7. Note the distance the kid keeps from Ronaldo as he takes off the fake hair.

I assume the kid was hired or chosen to be the “conscience” of the commercial bit. “Go out and kick the ball around! He won’t bite. Neither will not-his dog.”

Also, the “homeless guy” appears to have new athletic shoes; they can be seen as he is setting up in the plaza. Nikes, presumably.

It just reminds me that I hate shoe companies and their advertising campaigns.
