USC Rant from Someone Who Knows His Subject

October 23rd, 2017 · No Comments · College football, Sports Journalism, USC

Scott Wolf has been covering USC athletics seemingly forever.

He writes for the L.A. Daily News/Los Angeles News Group, and in an era where nearly everyone else lost their jobs, Wolf kept his.

Mostly because he generally breaks all significant news coming out of his alma mater’s athletic department. Readers, and editors, have picked up on that.

And because he is controversial, never sugar-coating anything. Making him the kind of guy Real Trojans love to hate. (But also read.)

His experience and his sources put him in a position where he can take on the football team, and did he ever over the weekend — when the Trojans were blitzed 49-14 at Notre Dame and can safely be said to have fallen out of the national-title discussion.

To read that rant …

… have a look here.

In short, Wolf criticizes just about everyone and everything having to do with 2017 USC football, from soft linemen right up to head coach Clay Helton, whom Wolf charges with assembling a staff that is failing to do its job when it comes to prepping players.

I appreciate when someone in the know goes off on a team. Being hard on a coach just for the hell of it … any old one can do that.

Being hard on a coach and a program you watch four or five or six days a week, and have for years and years, as Wolf has at USC … that’s different. That’s being crabby from a position of authority.

For more of Wolf venting, here are his grades for players and coaches after the Notre Dame debacle.

Wolf has been a presence, a force, in SoCal sports writing for as long as he has been covering the team, and that goes back at least 15 years, and probably significantly longer than that.

(In 2008, I did an item in which I ranked the top 10 sports writers in the Southern California market, and I had Wolf at No. 7. These days, given the departure of so many good journalists from print journalism in SoCal, he would rank higher.)

Anyway, if you are looking for strong opinion on all things Troy, opinion based on knowledge and experience … Wolf is your guy.
