Today’s List: The Best Nicknames of Players Weekend

August 26th, 2017 · No Comments · Baseball, Dodgers, Lists

Major League Baseball has designated this “Players Weekend” … which is supposed to be about the players having fun — mainly by revealing their nicknames and wearing them on their jerseys.

(Players probably would prefer an extra $1,000 in their paycheck, if MLB really wanted the players to feel special.)

Anyway, nicknames.

This does not work for everyone, of course, because X number of players are not made for nicknames, and other players seem to know that. Those are the guys called by their actual name, first or last, and will be wearing one of those names this weekend in lieu of a nickname.

Another factor: Nicknames often are given out by a high-status player — who can get away with it, and can make it stick. Not every team has a guy who can handle that role.

Some guys arrive at this weekend already known by their nicknames. “Mookie” is the nickname given to Markus Lynn Betts by his parents and he does not need another. Then there is Scooter Gennett, who will go with RYAN on his jersey this weekend — because that is his real name, not that anyone calls him that. See?

Literally hundreds of nicknames out there, and a lot of them follow the tired formula of “first letter of given name plus first syllable of family name” … which takes no imagination at all.

We are looking for clever as well as appropriate.

So, here is our top 10, counting down from 10, Letterman style.

10. CRUSH (Chris Davis, Baltimore slugger, riffing on Kostner movie character Crash Davis.)

9. KHRUSH (Khris Davis, Oakland slugger, riffing on Chris Davis.)

8. EL TRECE (Hanley Ramirez, Boston DH, known by the Spanish for “13”, his uniform number. Is any other ballplayer known by his number?)

7. AJAX (Austin Jackson, Cleveland Indians outfielder, riffing on the cliche A-JAX by making it into one word, the name of the Greek hero Ajax. Also the name of a cleaning powder.)

6. REDTURN2 (Justin Turner, Dodgers infielder, noting his red hair and the first syllable of his last name — which needed a 2 to become his Twitter handle. Sort of a marketing ploy as well as nickname.)

5. BAT BOY (Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Zach Davies, who looks like he might be 15 or 16 years old.)

4. EL CUERVO (Dodgers reliever Josh Ravin; raven in Spanish is Cuervo. Ravin is a U.S. citizen.)

3. LIL’d. (New York Mets catcher Travis d’Arnaud, with a sly comparison to former Dodgers ace Don “Big D” Drysdale, while emphasizing that the “d” in the French name “d’Arnaud” is lower-case.)

2. BLUE EYE (Washington Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer, who has one blue eye and one brown eye. The name calls attention to it, but it may have a crude-baseballer second meaning, as well. You figure it out.)

1. WILD HORSE (Yasiel Puig, Dodgers outfielder, so described, as a rookie, by Vin Scully, who perfectly described the playing style of the big Cuban.)

Here are a couple of longer lists, which you may find interesting. One from the Sporting News (yes, it still exists) and one from Forbes.)
