The Littlest/Most Fragile MVP?

May 22nd, 2015 · No Comments · Basketball, NBA

Stephen Curry may not be the shortest or the lightest NBA MVP.

But he seems the Most Likely to Break. He seems the most fragile. Which makes his current mastery of the game even more impressive.

OK, little MVPs.

Let’s consider them.

Bob Cousy of the Boston Celtics was MVP in 1957, and he was 6-1, 175.

Allen Iverson of the Philadelphia 76ers was MVP in 2001, and he was 6-0, 165.

Steve Nash of the Phoenix Suns was MVP in 2005 and 2006, and he was 6-3, 180.

(Everyone else was big and/or wide.)

And now we have Stephen Curry, Golden State Warriors point guard, the clear MVP in the 2014-15 season … and he is 6-3, 190.

In theory, he is “bigger” than the three guys listed, above.

In reality, he seems more frail than any of them.

Curry has what people used to call “small bones”. He looks like he could break if he fell over, and his falling over wouldn’t take much of a push.

Prior to this season, he was known for a fragile ankle, which doesn’t seem to have given him much trouble this year.

Still, I don’t see Curry doing this MVP thing multiple times. He just seems too fragile, in ways that Cousy and Iverson and Nash were not. I fear he will break down. Unlike those other three guys.

Iverson is the smallest guy to be voted MVP, and Larry Brown used to call him the “little kid” … but I never, ever thought of Allen Iverson as anything but a tough and durable guy.

I don’t feel that way about Stephen Curry.
