Technical Difficulties Can Really Kill Readership

June 9th, 2008 · 1 Comment · Sports Journalism

This site was up and down all day. Well, mostly down, as some of you may have noticed.

What was the message I got when I tried to log on? Something like … “error connecting to data base.”

I thought it was a “word press” thing, that being the blog site. But apparently it really was about problems with the company that we paid to get this domain name with word press. … Something called Dream Host.

So … we found their site, sent in a complaint, and they asked us to rank it from “not big whoop” to “end of the world as we know it if this site isn’t up muy pronto.” Seriously. Well, not that terminology, but they asked how important it was.

We went for alarm level orange. One down from red. Like, “we blog so people can read it, and right now they can’t.”

So after 12, 15 hours of being crashed, the thing now appears to be working, and those who are interested can read about James Curran, and the other couple of hundred things posted here since March.

We are all slaves of our technology now. We think we use it. In fact, it owns us. I realize this again. Yes.

Please, Mr.  Dream Host, allow this site to be seen. Is that OK?

Gee. You’re swell. Thanks much.

I tried – and failed – to check this blog multiple times on my phone Monday. I thought it was my phone and I was getting upset at my phone and calling it all sorts of names.

I guess I should go apologize.

    “Listen, phone, uh, about yesterday…”
