One NBA Fantasy Draft

October 22nd, 2019 · No Comments · Basketball, Fantasy Baseball, NBA

As the NBA season opens tonight, let’s pretend some readers are interested in finding out how a fantasy draft went for a six team league.

Who went first?

That would be a guy sometimes known as the Greek Freak, or Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Milwaukee Bucks forward. I suggest we stop calling a guy as good as he is a “freak”. With me on this?

OK, who was second? 30th? In a moment.

About the Sun Hoops League.

We have been running this for a long time … certainly back in the previous century and maybe as far back as the 80s. Before everyone in the country had a fantasy sports team.

Unlike the 12×25 baseball league most of us have been involved with, our NBA draft is short (an hour, tops) and quick and pretty much merciless.

We pick 60 players, 30 of whom are designated as starters (five per team, obviously) each Monday morning.

Then play goes on.

We have a seven-point game with these six categories: 1) shooting percentage, 2) free-throw percentage, 3) rebounds, 4) assists, 5) blocks+steals, 6) points per game average — and this last category is worth two points, to the other five’s one each.

So, on to the players, by team, lined up in our draft order — determined by pulling names out of a cap.

STEVE Forwards: Antetokounmpo (1), J. Collins (22), J. Jackson (43), Lavert (50). Centers: Jokic (8), Gobert (37). Guards: Beal (15), T. Young (29), Fox (36), Conley (57).

PAUL Forwards: Leonard (9), J. Butler (16), Siakam (31), Tatum (51); Centers: Towns (2), Ayton (38). Guards: D. Russell (23), Mitchell (30), McCollum (44), Rozier (58).

MIKE T. Forwards: Randle (17), Williamson (25), Aldridge (32), Gallinari (45); Centers: Kanter (24), Adebayo (39); Guards: Curry (3), Lillard (10), Morant (52), Alexander (59).

DAMIAN. Forwards: DeRozan (19), Porzingis (26), Bagley (46), T. Harris (53). Centers: Vucevic (11), Capela (40); Guards: Harden (4), Irving (18), LaVine (33), Oladipo (60).

GREGG. Forwards: A. Davis (5), George (13), Middleton (47), Warren (55); Centers: Drummond (20), Nurkic (54); Guards: Westbrook (12), Doncic (27), Simmons (34), Holiday (41).

MIKE D: Forwards: James (7), Griffin (14), Markkanen (35), Love (49); Centers: Embiid (6), Valanciunas (42); Guards: Booker (21), Walker (28), J. Murray (48), Hield (56)

Everyone plays everyone every week, and that adds up to a lot of games.

We are not nearly as serious about this as we are about the Sun Baseball League, but it gives us a little fantasy hit while baseball is taking six months off.
