Lance Armstrong Confesses

January 14th, 2013 · No Comments · Sports Journalism, The National

Not much more to be said about this. Aside, maybe, from “What took you so long?”

Two other thoughts:

Lance and performance-enhancing drugs … the scandal that seems never to be over. The New York Times suggested that he might be willing to testify against top officials and financial backers in the sport of cycling, and that will be messy. And USA Today indicated the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency is waiting to see if he comes in for a full “debrief.” That could lead to more messes, too. That is, Lance is not done wreaking havoc on the sport of cycling.

I will be interested to see what comes out of the Oprah Winfrey interview. One of our sports columnists, at The National, made the excellent point today that Oprah interviewing Lance is less than a perfect situation. Sure, she can get him to speak, but will she ask the right questions? He compares it to David Frost interviewing Richard Nixon about Watergate.

Sometimes you shouldn’t send celebrities out to do the definitive interview with a malefactor. Like taking a knife to a gunfight, and if that is the one and only time the malefactor is going to (possibly) be forthcoming, shouldn’t an expert being asking the questions rather than a celebrity looking for a career bump?

I am weary of Lance, but he is important as the living proof that drug cheats will lie and lie and lie and lie and lie … they will lie after their lies become ridiculous.

So, never believe someone’s firm (even violent) protestations of their innocence. Let’s wait for the lab tests to come back, and let’s not dismiss the testimony of “lesser” figures.
