Golden State Warriors and the End of a 54-Game Home Streak

April 1st, 2016 · No Comments · Basketball, Lakers, NBA

This is remarkable, at first blush, but also in closer analysis.

The Golden State Warriors had not lost a home game in 54 tries, extending back to January 27, 2015.

We know the Warriors have been the league’s best team, since last season, but to go that long without stubbing their toes at least once at home is a remarkable stat — and NBA record.

But it ended tonight, in a 109-106 loss to the Boston Celtics.

The Warriors looked a bit like a tired and jaded team. They have been expected to win every game for a year now, and have done just that about 90 percent of the time. Showing up a bit flat for a home game … well, it happens, even to a team as good as these Warriors.

The Celtics played well, and Stephen Curry, the official golden boy of American sports, had more turnovers than points (7-6) in the first half. Curry got it going late, finishing with 29 points, and he had a decent look at a 25-footer that would have tied the game in the final seconds … but missed short, which is what you do when you are tired.

The Warriors and Curry said they didn’t care, but that isn’t true.

They certainly care because the defeat puts a dent in their chances of breaking the NBA record for victories in a season, 72, set by the Chicago Bulls in 1995-96, helped along by a guy named Michael Jordan.

That is a stat that every serious NBA fan knows. Michael, the Bulls, 72 wins, breaking the Jerry West-Wilt Chamberlain Lakers record of 69 wins, set in 1971-72.

And the Warriors have conceded (as has their coach, Steve Kerr, who played for that record-setting Bulls team) that they want the record.

The Warriors started 24-0 and were 36-2, but they have lost three of their last 13, going back to the shocking defeat to the Lakers in Los Angeles.

They are now 68-8 and have to go 5-1 over the next few weeks to get past the Bulls and “72”, and that will not be easy, especially considering they have two games left with the San Antonio Spurs — one of them in Texas — and the Spurs are still unbeaten at home this year. If the Warriors lose that one, they have to win the other five.

Curry told ESPN.com’s Warriors beat writer that “it sucks to lose” and conceded that getting to 73 victories will not be easy.

Added Curry: “There’s a reason why, for 20-plus years, nobody’s been able to put together a season like Chicago did.”
