And Now We Wait

May 25th, 2017 · No Comments · Basketball, NBA

The Cleveland Cavaliers put the Boston Celtics out of their misery tonight.

(And I do so like the idea of the Celtics being stomped into a greasy little green spot on their home floor. Can we do this every year?)

And up next, the Cavs and LeBron James against the Golden State Warriors in the clash-of-the-titans NBA championship series.

I can hardly wait!

Oh, and about that wait …

It’s a full week, ladies and gentlemen, before they tip off this thing.

June 1, a week from tonight.

Which is a long time to wait for a playoffs game, in the NBA. An eternity when we have known since, oh, Christmas, that these two teams were going to be in the finals — barring a plane crash.

The NBA could have gone straight from the regular season to the Warriors-vs.-Cavs final. Thereby saving fans from throwing away a lot of money watching the eight playoffs series that did not include one of the league’s Big Two. (See: Utah vs. Clippers, et al)

It was 135-102 Cavs over the Celtics in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference final, lifting the Cavaliers to 11-1 in the postseason, a game behind the Warriors’ perfect 12-0.

In theory, the Mothra and Godzilla of the league might have lost another game or two in the conference finals, but the San Antonio Spurs and Celtics played without their best guy in the final three games of the conference finals.

That would be Kawhi Leonard, who went down with an ankle injury with the Spurs up 23 in Game 1, which San Antonio lost by two; and Isaiah Thomas, whose season ended after Game 2, due to a hip injury.

So, we wait.

Could make a case we have been waiting for this matchup since Part 2 of what has turned into a finals trilogy.

Maybe one more week isn’t such a big problem, after all.
