You Can Call Me ‘Baron’ … or Maybe ‘Professor’

March 26th, 2016 · No Comments · Abu Dhabi, Travel

Gulf airlines always are looking for new ways to gild the lily. First class? Not good enough, for the mega-rich. Kind of down-market, really.

So we have something better for you, at Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Airways.

This is on the mammoth A380 only, for those who like to spend $20,000 on themselves to fly — one way — between Abu Dhabi and London.

The Residence. A three-room suite for two, with bedroom.

And once we get past the stupidity of spending that kind of money for an eight-hour flight … my favorite part of this is the “drop-down” window at the Etihad site — where you let the airline know by which title you prefer to be known.

Here they are, alphabetically:

Baron, Baroness, Brigadier, Captain …

Colonel, Doctor, General …

HE (His/her Excellency), HH (His/her Highness, HRH (His/her Royal Highness …

Lady, Lord, Master …

(And now we go all plebeian) Miss, Mister, Mrs. …

Professor, Sheikh, Sheikha …

Sir.

We stumbled across this just today, on a screen grab at a very interesting website which provides tips on the best way to use miles and points, while traveling.

The other blog item was written in 2014, ahead of Etihad’s delivery of A380s, and the author was kicking around the idea of crowd-sourcing the cost of checking out The Residence through a Kickstarter campaign.

Don’t know how that turned out. I’d think “not well” …

But I love the titles thing.

When Miss, Mister and Missus is not good enough … please let us know you are a baron.

I do wonder, though, about some of the titles not included.

What if I am an earl? Or a viscount? Or a king?

What if I am a president or a premier?

Will I have to break that to the “Savoy-trained butler” upon arrival?

Uh, Jeeves, I should let you know, I’m the president of my country. So you can be on your best behavior, right? Don’t let me nod off so that I snooze right through that $20,000 flight

I am appalled that an airline would ask that much money for a 125-square-foot chunk of space on a big plane, but I am more appalled that people apparently are buying it — and they are. Or were. Including the $40,000 “Residence” flight to Australia.

Who are these people?

Those who would prefer to be known as Baron or General … or His Profligacy.
