Video of All 42 Goals by Landon Donovan

May 20th, 2010 · No Comments · Uncategorized

Stumbled across this today, and I’m glad I did.

I was reading a story on Clint Dempsey in the New York Times and I followed a link to his clever goal for Fulham against Juventus … and off on the side of the youtube home page I noticed a clip that has all 17 of Dempsey’s goals for the U.S. national team.

But, more importantly, I also found an eight-minute-49-second clip that shows all 42 goals scored by Landon Donovan for the national team.

Some numbers behind the goals.

Of Donovan’s 42 goals …

–29 were scored in the run of play. Of those 29 goals, 12 came off his right foot, 12 off his left and four were headers. Clearly, he can score with both feet, particularly once he is inside the box.

–Two goals came on restarts, including the longest goal of his career, a good 35 yards, maybe 40, when he sagely shot the ball the instant the referee whistled action — but before the opponent (Barbados) was paying attention.

–12 goals came on penalties. All off his right foot, of course. Of those 12, he went left twice, right eight times and twice went down the middle as he sensed/saw the goalkeeper commit.

–He scored one goal (his first, vs. Mexico) wearing jersey No. 13. He scored 14 goals wearing No. 21, including the two in the 2002 World Cup. His remaining 27 goals came while wearing the No. 10 shirt.

–Two of his goals were clearly “chip” shots — lofted over the defense.

–Six of his goals came from outside the box. Including the two restarts, of course. He scored one of the long-distance goals (No. 28) with his left foot.

–Eight of his last 12 goals have come via penalty; only three of his first 30 did.

–He is wearing a necklace that we can describe as, oh, unfortunate for one goal, No. 15.

–Look at the video yourself, but in my opinion his best goals were the header against Mexico (goal No. 7) , when he ran about 60 yards to get in front of Eddie Lewis’s cross … and the thunderous crack from just inside the semicircle against Ecuador (goal No. 30).

Note that the maker of the video — 723 Football Films — numbers the goals in the upper-left corner of the screen.

Also note that the same maker has produced video of all of Dempsey’s national team goals, as well as all 17 of the national team goals of DaMarcus Beasley, the 12 scored by Carlos Bocanegra, the 12 scored by Eddie Johnson and the 11 scored by Brian Ching.

Who is 723 Football Films?

Here is a link to what appears to be the twitter account for the company/firm/guy.

Whoever is responsible … I’m glad it was done. And I’m also curious about why they have been viewed so few times.

Consider this our part in getting the word out.
