Today’s Random Event: Crabby Reporters

August 16th, 2008 · No Comments · Beijing Olympics

OK, apropos of nothing. Other than showing we’re beginning to get a little crabby a week into the Summer Olympics.

Right on schedule.

Anyway, I’m on a crowded bus heading over to the wrestling venue. A couple of clods from, I’m gonna say, Romania are taking up two seats with their equipment, and the bus is now packed.

(Who knew women’s wrestling was so popular?)

And finally one of the clods realizes he’s taking up too much space and leans over and taps a dark-haired guy. Pokes him gently, once or twice.

The dark-haired guy doesn’t respond. (I will note here that he looks very Latin, dark, dashing, handsome; probably a TV guy. He’s wearing a fanny pack with “El Salvador” on it.)

The Romanian (or whatever) waits a second, then pokes the dark-haired guy again. I mean, you probably shouldn’t poke people to get their attention, but who knows what language the guy you wish to get the attention of speaks?

Anyway, the Latin guy turns around, and pokes the Romanian guy, who seems surprised by this. And the Latin guy shakes his head at the offer of a seat, indicating he would prefer to stand by doing a “thumb’s up” thing.

It was just all generically rude and unpleasant … and it made me think that reporters are never far from popping a gasket and going postal. Or going journalist, might be more accurate.
