The Bieber Weekend

May 5th, 2013 · No Comments · Abu Dhabi, Dubai, The National, UAE

I don’t know Justin Bieber from the man in the moon. I have to keep checking to make sure his first name is Justin, not Dustin. An old-guy thing. Except that I never would have been a fan at any age. Hmm.

I do know this:

Dustin … Justin Bieber made some impressions in his two-days-and-change in Dubai, just up the road from Abu Dhabi.

Let’s start with the things we are sure happened, and then move on to the rumors.

He played two nights. He was approximately two hours late each night. A PR firm issued an apology the first night, but also said it couldn’t be sure when he would go on stage the second night.

The first night, Saturday, attracted a big crowd. The Sunday crowd? About half as big, The National reported.

Skewed heavily towards teens and pre-teens. The National reported the fans were as young as 6. And that made the overall collection weird, because parents often were waiting outside the venue to pick up their 10-year-old kids who just had to go.

Parents grumbled more than a little that both shows were on school nights. (The school week here is Sunday through Thursday.) Reporters from The National told of small kids sleeping on the grass at the Dubai Sevens grounds, waiting for the 19-year-old star to finally appear, at about 10 p.m.

He appeared tired, and it could have been about Dubai being shows Nos. 90 and 91 on the Believe Tour that began in September. The National’s pop music critic, Saeed Saeed, was struck by what appeared to be weariness on the part of Bieber. The show is heavy on dancing, and it was noted that it is very difficult to sing when a person is engaged in strenuous exercise.

It also was strongly suggested that lots and lots of lip-synching went on. That dance-vs.-sing thing, again.

But the kids seemed to love it. “It was such a great show, and he played all my favorite songs,” one kid said. Another tweeted: “Definitely a Belieber now!”

On the second night, an overwrought fan scrambled up on the stage and almost wrecked the show. He apparently wanted to hug Bieber, and a security guard went after the interloper so enthusiastically that a piano was knocked over. (Some of the parents noted that the piano part continued to play, as the song went on — without a piano being played. More recordings, that is.)

Local security handled it all. The fan was not cited. The Dubai police were at no time involved.

Now for the rumors, some more rumory than others.

After the Saturday night show, Bieber allegedly turned up at one of Dubai’s trendy night clubs, but left in a huff when he was not served alcohol. Too young.

As he was driven away, he was hanging outside the car.

Before the show today, he allegedly was caught speeding on six consecutive cameras on the main freeway through Dubai. He apparently was driving a Lamborghini. One version of the story (in the British tabloid, The Sun, so don’t take it as gospel) had him abandoning the Lamborghini before cops could catch him.

The takeaway?

One pop star roiled up the UAE all by himself.

The kid, whose career began with him marketed as a clean-cut guy, might be getting into some bad behavior, probably the result of too much too soon. You have to wonder if his career will end badly and prematurely because of too overindulgence. Been known to happen in that profession.

It was not boring, at any rate. Never. Every hour or two, a new rumor popped up on social media. Some of which may have been true. Some of which even old people found curious.
