Ten Things I Miss about SoCal/USA

February 21st, 2010 · 7 Comments · Abu Dhabi, Hong Kong, Lakers, Lists

I’m going to do the math. I’ve been out of the United States for … hold on … for 128 days now. My longest consecutive stretch, eclipsing the 120 (or thereabouts) I spent in and around Hong Kong in 2008-09.

No, not a significant stretch for veteran expats, or career diplomats or military people based overseas. But a PR (personal record)  is a PR.

And the basis of a list.

The 10 things I miss most* about being away from home in Long Beach/California/USA:

* — Does not include friends and family, of course.

10. Trail mix. The kind they sell at Trader Joe’s. Or at Costco … the sort that has nuts of all sorts but also M&Ms (or M&Ms knockoffs). It’s possible to buy trail mix here, but it is shockingly expensive, and I have refused to cave, so far.

9 Trader Joe’s and Costco. The U.S. does Big Box Stores better than anyone. It’s a fact. And those two … holes in my life!

8. House addresses. We don’t have them here, so it’s almost impossible to get anything mailed to your home. No,  really. I have no idea if this apartment has an address. I can tell you that I have no idea what it is. This is the country, remember, where your doctor will tell you his office is “next to the HSBC on Hamdan Street, behind the pharmacy and across from the falafel stand.” I miss the idea of “946 Linden Avenue.”

7. Winter. Even the SoCal version. Our winter here has been two months of mid-70s. And it’s about done.

6. HGTV. No. Really. Watch enough “House Hunters International” (and I have) and it’s addictive. If it is available via some bandit Japanese streaming site, I havent seen it yet.

5. The Lakers. Haven’t seen them play a stretch that lasts 60 seconds continuously (that is, something not a video highlight on espn.com) since Game 6 of the NBA Finals. I have no idea what Ron Artest looks like with that team, and it bugs me.

4.  Pizza. They sell it here, but I don’t trust it. Haven’t had pizza in 128 days. How many of you can say that?

3. Tamales. And enchiladas and shredded-beef tacos. But especially tamales. Again, a spot or two here alleges to have Mexican cuisine, but if Europe can’t get it right, what chance does the Arabian Peninsula have? Exactly.

2. (tie) My Saturn and my bicycle. No car here. I don’t miss it much … except for when I want to go someplace without waiting for a taxi. And a bike … this is the worst place for a bike that isn’t the Harbor Freeway. Broken glass, pitiless heat, insane drivers, no bike lanes, no place to park your bike or lock it or store it. I am bikeless!

1. Jeopardy! Alex Trebek and the gang. I rarely missed it back home, and if I was out I taped it. Helped keep me sharp. Competing with Leah to see who could blurt out the right answer first. Nothing like Jeopardy! over here. Not even in Arabic. I dreamt of the show the other night. Really. I did.

Interesting list … what’s the flip side? What don’t you miss?

Mexican food! Cantina Laredo in Khalidyah Mall. They also deliver, but communicating on the phone to the driver where he should bring the food is Advanced Abu Dhabi.

I get good Mexican food here, but it’s not as good as the many places in SoCal. Rosa Maria’s. Miguel’s. Mexico Lindo before it shuttered. And of course In-N-Out.

Ironically, living near Bullhead City, Ariz., I miss a lot of the same things you do!

I was dreaming about a Costco the other day – don’t see why there isn’t one here!

And what’s not to trust about Pizza Hut?
