Satirical Local ‘Newspaper’ Takes on Topics

April 21st, 2012 · No Comments · Dubai, Journalism, Newspapers, tourism, UAE

The Pan-Arabia Enquirer could be a regional English-language newspaper.

It actually is an online satire site of The Onion ilk.

And it is quite amusing, in my considered opinion, and points up the silliness of various concepts and institutions — which is the point of satire.

If some of it is a little too “inside” for the rest of the world … everyone ought to be able to grasp some of the humor.

For example: This story about Azerbaijan’s plans to build the world’s tallest building, a title currently held by the Dubai and the UAE, with the Burj Khalifa.

The Saudis plan to build a structure taller than the Burj Khalifa, but the Azerbaijan concept would be bigger than both, and the comment “That’s just showing off, plain and simple,” is amusing.

We wonder who runs the site. It is a Briton, or someone who uses British English. That is plain from the word usage.

It also is someone who is both good with satire (which is not easy) and also can construct and maintain a complicated website — or knows someone who does it for him/her/them.

When looking at sites like this, you assume it’s a labor of love, because it is hard to imagine how it pays.

Even the “ads” have something silly going on. One ad up, at this writing, has only the words: “Eat shawarmas” … and at the bottom of the ad in small letters is: “Brought to you by the Shawarma Marketing Board.”

And one more story link, then you can just go explore yourself: About an, in theory, fictional Briton who is back in Dubai for “the 16th time since he swore he would never come back.”

Many expats arrive in the UAE, complain about this, that and the other (“not enough theatre,” in this telling), leave in a huff, “good riddance,” and all that … and slink back here soon after for 1) a dose of winter sun or 2) a paying job.

OK. One more story link. This one about the Ajman Film Festival moving to Cannes is a good one, because most of the cities in the UAE seem to have film festivals with more hope than substance.

Ajman is one of the smaller of the emirates, and may not even have a film festival — though it probably is considering one, or some expat is trying to convince the authorities of what a great idea it would be.

I suggest taking a look at the Pan-Arabia Enquirer.
