Fun with Newspaper Crosswords

February 5th, 2015 · No Comments · Newspapers

I enjoy doing newspaper crossword puzzles. Particularly the big Sunday crosswords from the New York Times. Particularly when they have fun clues, as does one I completed the other day.

The overarching clue — which applies to all the long answers — is paper chase.

And I will tell you right now the answers have newspaper names in them. “Paper”, see?

Here they are. It helps if you know the names of several medium-sized U.S. newspapers.

Groundskeeper’s bagful at an Atlantic City newspaper? (14 letters)

Horse owned by by a Boston newspaper? (12)

Correspondence to the editor of an Allentown newspaper? (11)

Columbia, S.C., newspaper’s security department? (11)

Way into the bathroom at a Macon newspaper? (12)

Shell shot at a Harrisburg newspaper? (14)

Come-on at a Lakeland newspaper? (10)

Recruiter at a Wichita newspaper? (10)

Think about those for a second. Then I will give you more clues.

If you got any of them … I’m impressed. I work in the business and I don’t know the names of a couple of those papers, which are fairly small.

Next clue: I will tell you the name of those eight newspapers.

Atlantic City Press … (14 letters, with second word)

Boston Globe … (12)

Allentown Call (11)

Columbia State … (11)

Macon Telegraph … (12)

Harrisburg Patriot … (14)

Lakeland Ledger … (10)

Wichita Eagle … (10)

Give those a thought.

Another clue: The answers will be two-word phrases that include the newspaper name — but using the name as a regular noun. The answer is not about newspapers, per se.

A few minutes to think about that. (Imagine the Jeopardy music being played.)

OK! Still with me?

More clues!

I will give you the first one, in case you are having trouble with the concept.

Atlantic City … pressclippings

Get it? Press is the name of the paper in Atlantic City, and press clippings are what we call bits of a newspaper cut out and saved. (Pre-websites.)

Here are the other seven with a few of the correct letters given to you. Now it becomes more like hangman — seeing words without all the letters. (Spaces indicate a missing letter. I’m capping up because it’s easier to see.)

Boston GLOBETR TT ERS

Allentown CALL E TE S

Columbia STATEP L CE

Macon TELEGRAPH EY

Harrisburg PATRIOTMIS I E

Lakeland LEDGER I E

Wichita EAGLES O T

More Jeopardy music?

And now … the complete answers.

Boston globetrotters

Allentown callletters

Columbia statepolice

Harrisburg patriotmissile

Macon telegraphkey

Lakeland ledgerline

Wichita eaglescout

Wasn’t that fun?

No?
