Big Boys Toys in Abu Dhabi

6 - Sandwich Bikes - coming soon to a hipster near you

Lord help us, when guys with money meet new gadgets or souped-up vehicles or other unneeded things — well, yes, toys.

And where better to stage a show dedicated to Toys for Big Boys than the UAE? OK, it probably should have been held in Dubai, which has a hard-earned reputation for wretched excess, but we shouldn’t underrate Abu Dhabi’s Big Boys’ ability top pony up millions for things nobody needs.

Start by having a look at the “toys” photo gallery, published in The National.

This is how the PR firm working this event described what is available, and what goes on:

Thousands of gadget fans, petrol heads, high-end technology enthusiasts and the simply curious descended on the third day of Big Boys Toys 2015 – the world’s ultimate luxury lifestyle super show – at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre today.

With everything from monster trucks, speed boats, customized motorcycles and the Tumbler Batmobile to gold-plated sound systems, $1 million drones, electric wakeboards and levitating light-bulbs, Big Boys Toys collects a mind-boggling collection of fierce machines, futuristic products and fantastical inventions.

We probably are perpetuating stereotypes here by calling them Big Boys Toys, but have you ever seen a woman buy a drone? Or solid-gold music systems? Or a gold-plated electric violin? Or a Batmobile?

Anyway, the photo gallery gives prices for the items listed there. Ranging up to $30 million for the solid-gold (and diamond encrusted) music system.

The media release generally does not mention price (if you have to ask …) and it has at least one item that looks almost functional as well as cool. “Coming soon to a hipster near you”, the flacks suggest. And that would be the “sandwich” bicycle, made of plywood (above).

If I had $1 million in cash lying about, maybe I’d go browse (no, I wouldn’t), but don’t things like these break down a lot? Aren’t they in the shop most of the time? And don’t Big Boys get tired of them fairly quickly?

Rather like Little Boys and their toys, I’d think.
